Pinisi Bakery

Pinisi Bakery in New York

  • Cake: moist, slight hint of cocoa but could use more
  • Frosting: a very good cream cheese
  • Coloring: bright red, lots of dye
  • Consistency: cake was moist but slightly cumbly at the same time. frosting was nice and soft.
  • Additional Comments: After picking up a buzz about this bakery's red velvet, this cupcake didn't disappoint! It's not the perfect red velvet as there isn't quite enough cocoa in it and much too much dye, but it's very good and we would highly recommend it. Please note: This cupcake is available with or without the cake crumbles on top.
This bakery also makes many other interesting cupcakes that look just delicious!

Cupcake Vineyards

Cupcake Vineyards in Various U.S. Locations

Red Velvet Wine
  • Cake: n/a
  • Frosting: n/a
  • Coloring: deep red
  • Consistency: tart and dry but with enough sweetness to keep you interested
  • Additional Comments: Okay, so it's not a pastry of any sort but there was no way we were passing this up! For a red, this wine is pretty strong but we actually quite enjoyed it and it seemed to have a hint of cherry. They say it also has a touch of chocolate but we did not taste it. If you can get it in your state we'd recommend trying it to see for yourself!
As a side note, we've also tried the Cupcake Vineyards Chardonnay and enjoyed it very much. Looking forward to trying their other wines!

Bongo Room

 Bongo Room in Chicago
Red Velvet Pancakes with Warm Vanilla Creme Sauce and Toasted Walnuts
  • Cake: chocolatey, red velvet perfection
  • Frosting: the warm vanilla creme sauce with toasted walnuts does have a cream cheese flavor in addition to the vanilla and is so, so unbelievably good
  • Coloring: a perfect dark red
  • Consistency: moist, fluffy, springy
  • Additional Comments: Oh. My. God. Not only is this red velvet perfection, this is pancake perfection. It's so good you will weep of happiness from the first bite, and you may just die from satisfaction before you're finished. If this came in cupcake form it would be the Holy Grail. Perfection 100 times over. Run to the Bongo Room. Run! Why haven't you already left?

Bombon Cafe

Bombon Cafe in Chicago

Red Velvet Cookie with White Chocolate Chips
  • Cake: This cookie actually has a very good red velvet flavor - plenty of cocoa, not overly sweet. The chips were a wonderful white chocolate, not overly sweet, and just the right addition to the cookie.
  • Frosting: n/a
  • Coloring: nice dark red
  • Consistency: chips were the perfect semi-soft but the cookie was a little dry.
~We give this cookie 4 out of 5 stars~

7-Eleven

7-Eleven in Various U.S. Locations

  • Cake: tasted mostly like yellow cake, sweet, needs more cocoa
  • Frosting: somewhat cream cheese-ish but we do think it was buttercream
  • Coloring: pretty red, lots of dye
  • Consistency: somewhere in the middle of dry and moist. nothing to write home nor complain about
  • Additional Comments: We know what you're thinking - cupcakes from 7-Eleven? We had to give it a try though, as all cupcakes have been created equal. Come on, for $1.49 you'd try it too. Besides, it came in the cute recyclable cupcake container.

Magnolia Bakery

Magnolia Bakery in New York

  • Cake: extremely sweet
  • Frosting: buttercream, excruciatingly sweet, overabundant
  • Coloring: very red (a lot of food coloring)
  • Consistency: very dry and crumbly
  • Additional Comments: Now made famous by Sex and the City, this bakery is thought to be one of the quintessential New York City places to visit but their red velvet leaves a lot to be desired. If you're looking for a simple sugar rush then this is your place, but if you're out for the perfect red velvet don't stop here.
Are you at Magnolia Bakery looking for a treat but know the red velvet will disappoint you? Try their banana pudding or pumpkin cupcakes (available only in the fall) instead!

Red Velvet Cheesecake with an Oreo Crust
    • Cake: tasted more like plain cheesecake than anything red velvet
    • Frosting: very sugary but pleasant
    • Coloring: fire engine red (pure food coloring)
    • Consistency: cake was very soft and could have been a bit firmer, but the crust was crumbly and delicious
    ~We give this cheesecake 3 out of 5 stars~

    Baked By Melissa

Baked By Melissa in New York

    • Cake: tasted more of sugar than any discernible flavor
    • Frosting: could not tell if it was cream cheese or buttercream because it just tasted like sugar
    • Coloring: leaning towards dark but still much too red. tongue was dyed red instantly.
    • Consistency: cupcake was consumed in one bite but it seemed plenty moist
    • Additional Comments: This cupcake is too small for the large price ($1 each).

      Cafe Angelique

      Cafe Angelique in New York

      • Cake: did not have enough cocoa flavoring, though it was filled with a small amount of chocolate mousse
      • Frosting: deliciously cream-cheesy
      • Coloring: dark red, almost perfect
      • Consistency: good and moist
      • Additional Comments: Although it's not common to fill a red velvet cupcake, the chocolate mouse was a nice addition. A bit more would have been preferable since they took the time to add mousse in the first place, but it was good nonetheless. Nice presentation in the wrapper!

      Molly's Cupcakes

      Molly's Cupcakes in Chicago

      • Cake: overall very good but could have used more cocoa
      • Frosting: delectable cream cheese
      • Coloring: leaning towards dark but still much too red
      • Consistency: moist
      • Additional Comments: We didn't care for the confetti on top. It added unnecessary crunchiness and more sugar.
*Special Note: This delightful cupcake shop now has a location in New York City! Check it out, New Yorkers!

      Martha's Country Bakery

Martha's Country Bakery in Astoria, New York

      • Cake: a nice cocoa flavor
      • Frosting: a tangy cream cheese that was a little softer than we'd like
      • Coloring: a perfect dark red - the color all red velvet cupcakes should strive for! the cocoa leads the way rather than overpowering it with red dye.
      • Consistency: fairly moist
      • Additional Comments: Although it's not fancy in looks, this cupcake is well on its way to perfection! Grab one and head down to Astoria Park to eat while you watch the boats sail by.

        Two Little Red Hens

Two Little Red Hens in New York
        http://www.twolittleredhens.com/

        • Cake: delightful and not overbearingly sweet, but could use some more cocoa flavor
        • Frosting: true cream cheese bliss! any other frosting we have ever tasted pales in comparison to this.
        • Coloring: fairly red (too much food coloring)
        • Consistency: deliciously moist
        • Additional Comments: This is the closest we have found to a perfect red velvet. If only it were darker and had a bit more cocoa, this would be the epitome of red velvet heaven. These cupcakes are large and sold at a great value ($3). They can also be found around town in Saks Fifth Avenue and Dean & Deluca but are sold at much higher price than in the bakery.
