Stone Ridge Creamery: Amy's Red Velvet Cake

Stoneridge Creamery in Various US Locations

  • Ice Cream: Wonderful chocolate flavor.
  • Frosting: Cream cheese bits to die for
  • Coloring: Beautiful red.
  • Consistency: Deliciously creamy.
  • Additional Comments: Basically perfect. Red velvet ice cream is a hard thing to master. Top ice cream brands have tried and failed to perfect the difficult task of making something so delicious into ice cream form. Amy, from Stone Ridge Creamery, has done it. This ice cream is so creamy and smooth, it almost tasted like a super moist red velvet cake. It layers swirls of vanilla and tangy cream cheese in a way that compliments the red velvet perfectly. I gave my friend a bite of this ice cream and by the time I got back into the room, half the box was gone. Stone Ridge Creamery is hard to find in most cities, but it's equivalent to winning the lottery if you see this in your grocer's freezer. This Red Velvet ice cream is absolutely A+

Jewel Bake Shoppe Cake Roll

Jewel Osco in Various US Locations

  • Cake: Good Chocolate Flavor
  • Frosting: Slight cream cheese taste.
  • Coloring: Deep red.
  • Consistency: Pretty dry.
  • Additional Comments: I know what you're thinking, "why do they keep getting red velvet cakes from grocery stores and gas stations?" You might think we're crazy but any time I see anything red velvet, I have to check it out. When I was at Jewel the other day with my mom, standing in the check-out line, I spotted this cake roll. I knew I couldn't eat this whole "loaf" (it came in a package that resembled a loaf of bread) of red velvet, especially since I knew it wasn't going to live up to my standards. That's why when I saw it at a church potluck dinner, I was pleasantly surprised that I got another chance to taste this cake. Along with my many other desserts, (I'm allowing myself to get fat this thanksgiving week) I took a slice of this thing. I brought it back to my chair, anticipating the delight of red velvet. I took a bite and immediately wanted a sip of water. It was very dry. The chocolate flavor, however, was surprisingly delicious. I took a scoop of the cream cheese swirled in the center of the dessert. It was kind of a let-down, being only slightly cream cheese-y. This experience has shown me that red velvet can be found in the strangest of places. I know never to judge a package or its manufacturer by its cover.
